Let's make a film

A memory shared by Abinaya Mummoorthy · Trincomalee, Sri Lanka

Set in Trincomalee around 2023, this animated true story sheds light on the societal prejudices and challenges surrounding LGBTQ+ themes. The narrator, an aspiring filmmaker, found inspiration for a short film through a male friend in her group. This friend was frequently mocked by other boys because he only socialized with girls. When she asked him why, he confided that he felt more comfortable around girls because he harbored a secret crush on an older neighborhood boy. He kept this hidden from his male peers out of a deep fear of being ridiculed and bullied.

Moved by his silent struggles and pain, the narrator decided to write a film script to bring awareness to his situation. She pitched the idea to a group of teenage girls who were open-minded, understood LGBTQ+ issues, and agreed to act in it. However, when she approached a group of boys for technical help with the cameras, they immediately mocked the concept, dismissing the idea of making a film on such a taboo topic. The situation worsened when the narrator went home, only to be met with a furious mother and mocking relatives. She soon realized that the very boys she had asked for help had sneakily gone to her mother and complained about her film project, sparking a household conflict and trying to sabotage her creative, empathetic endeavor before it even began.
